Following former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s revelation in his newly launched book, A Journey in Service, that the 1966 coup was not an Igbo-led coup as widely alleged, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called for an official apology and ₦10 trillion in compensation from President Bola Tinubu.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In a statement issued on Sunday in Abakaliki, the Deputy National President of the Ohanaeze faction, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, emphasized that the coup’s aftermath had devastating consequences for the Igbo people, ultimately contributing to the horrors of the Biafra War. He highlighted the immense loss of life, with approximately three million Igbo—mostly women and children—killed during the conflict, a tragedy that continues to shape the community’s collective memory.
Isiguzoro insisted that Babangida’s revelation should prompt Nigerians to reexamine the historical injustices suffered by the Igbo people. He urged President Tinubu to seize this moment to offer a public and unequivocal apology on behalf of past military administrations, particularly that of General Yakubu Gowon.
According to him, the demand for ₦10 trillion in reparations is not arbitrary but a symbolic acknowledgment of the profound losses endured by the Igbo people, emphasizing that such restitution is long overdue.
