In an interview with AfricaSoccer, Adebayor condemned Carragher’s comments, asserting that they were disrespectful to African football and its people.

“These remarks show complete disrespect—not just to AFCON but to all Africans,” Adebayor stated.

“It’s the same story every time AFCON approaches—clubs hesitate to release players, and critics try to diminish its importance.

“I’ve faced world-class defenders in the Premier League; Carragher is not one of them.”

Carragher’s comments, made during a Sky Sports discussion on Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances, suggested that AFCON lacks the prestige of the Euros or the World Cup. Despite later clarifying his stance, he continues to face backlash.
